The Carbon-Efficient Campus: Reducing Operational Costs Through Predictive Energy Management

In an era of rising energy costs and increasing sustainability mandates, campus facility leaders are often “data rich but insight poor.” This session explores how institutions can move beyond traditional monthly billing to a real-time, data-driven approach to utility management.

Drawing on successful implementations—including foundational work at the Clemson University Watt Family Innovation Center—Tim Howard (CEO, CarbonCents) will demonstrate how to unify disparate utility streams into a single, visual dashboard. Attendees will learn how to identify hidden inefficiencies in water, power, and gas usage, quantify their carbon footprint in real-time, and leverage predictive analytics to drive significant operational savings.

Whether your goal is to hit Net-Zero targets or simply reduce the annual utility spend, this session provides a practical roadmap for modernizing your physical plant’s digital infrastructure.

Analyze Utility Data Integration: Participants will be able to identify how to unify disparate data streams (water, power, gas, and air quality) from various building systems into a single, cohesive visualization platform.

Implement Predictive Savings Strategies: Attendees will learn how to use real-time monitoring to detect anomalies, such as leaks or energy spikes, moving from a reactive “billing” mindset to a proactive operational strategy.

Quantify Carbon Footprints: Participants will gain an understanding of how to transform raw utility consumption data into real-time carbon emission metrics to meet institutional sustainability and ESG goals.

Evaluate ROI on Smart Infrastructure: Attendees will be able to assess the cost-benefit of implementing energy-monitoring software versus traditional manual auditing in a campus environment.

CEO and Co-Founder, CarbonCents

Tim Howard is a sustainability technology entrepreneur with over 30 years of expertise in software development, infrastructure, and sustainability. He co-founded CarbonCents in early 2022 to help organizations reduce their carbon footprints and operational costs through data-driven insights.

The company originated at Clemson University, where Howard served as the Facility Solutions Manager at the Watt Family Innovation Center. While there, he collaborated with researchers at the Clemson University Energy Visualization and Analytics Center (CEVAC) to develop the predictive energy management platform that became the foundation for CarbonCents. Under his leadership, the company has successfully commercialized this technology, earning recognition as an SCRA member company and receiving significant seed funding and grants to transform the energy market.

His work focuses on unifying disparate utility data into actionable modules—such as CarbonBI, SiteBI, and BuildingBI—to help entities monitor power, water usage, and indoor air quality in real-time.
