Powering Innovation: Rethinking Central Utility Strategies for the Future of Academic Research Campuses

This session examines the Harvey S. Peeler College of Veterinary Medicine at Clemson University as a case study to illustrate how feasibility studies and advanced planning influence campus utility infrastructure design and project budgets. Attendees will review the cost-benefit analysis of central utility plant installation, site location, and evaluate the role of resiliency and system redundancies in shaping strategic decisions. The presentation highlights lifecycle assessments to clarify long-term operational and upfront costs, and explores decision-making strategies that address system complexity, future expansion, and maintenance accessibility. Insights are tailored for academic facilities planners seeking practical approaches to campus-wide utility management.

Analyze the impact of feasibility studies and advanced planning on campus utility infrastructure design, project budgeting, and strategic decision-making in academic facilities.

Evaluate the cost-benefit considerations of central utility plant installation and system selection, including lifecycle assessments and long-term operational versus upfront costs.

Discuss the importance of resiliency and system redundancies in utility infrastructure, and how these factors influence campus-wide utility management and future expansion strategies.
