Space Utilization Insights for Strategic Campus Decisions

This session explores how measuring space utilization in learning environments empowers colleges and universities to make proactive, data driven decisions amid evolving institutional priorities and economic pressures. Drawing from three recent space studies conducted for different Colleges within Georgia Tech, the presentation will showcase real world examples of how institutions can leverage data to advocate for students, faculty, and staff while positioning themselves strategically for capital funding. Attendees will learn how thoughtful analysis of space needs can transform reactive planning into intentional, future focused decision making that strengthens institutional resilience and equips campuses to prepare for sustainable long term growth.

Evaluate data driven planning frameworks that help institutions prioritize capital investments, reduce operational inefficiencies, and maintain facilities that support long term health, safety, and institutional resilience.

Apply evidence based space assessment methodologies—illustrated through Georgia Tech case studies—to improve functional adjacencies, utilization, and environmental quality within academic buildings.

Differentiate proactive versus reactive space planning strategies and determine how early data collection can mitigate risks related to deferred maintenance, capacity shortfalls, and shifting enrollment patterns.

Assess the relationship between existing space conditions and institutional reporting metrics to improve alignment between facility performance, academic needs, and utilization data, enabling more efficient planning and evidence based space assessment.
