Essential Facilities Design Considerations

This course reviews IBC minimum performance requirements for buildings and other structures designated as Essential Facilities, including but not limited to, Hospitals, Police Stations, Emergency Operation Centers, etc. Primarily the discussion will be centered on Exterior Components and Cladding (Building Envelope) system pre-design due diligence, including design peer review, performance and manufacturers’ warranty evaluation. Throughout the presentation, the minimum International Building Code (IBC) performance requirements, with specific code references, are presented. Roof system uplift calculation requirements, as well as Fenestrations (windows) missile impact requirements, will be discussed.

Learning Objective 1:
Review International Building Code (IBC), International Existing Building Code (IEBC), ASCE-7 and ICC 500 Component and Cladding systems/assemblies’ minimum performance requirements for Risk Category IV Essential Facilities.

Learning Objective 2:
Discuss process for obtaining minimum design loads required to prevent catastrophic building Component & Cladding failure, comply with IBC requirements to preserve the safety and welfare of occupants.

Learning Objective 3:
Discuss the difference between building minimum design pressures & roof assembly maximum design pressures required to prevent roof blowoff and potential harm to building occupants.

Learning Objective 4:
Component & Cladding Missile impact requirements for Wind-borne Debris Regions, and its effects on building interior pressurization that may result in catastrophic building failure.

Learning Objective 5:
Roof system warranty coverage and expectations.
